One of the most important discoveries made on this expedition, was that the ocean floor is not smooth. They found that it had many different depths to it and that there were bumps, ridges, and trenches throughout the ocean. Another discovery that they made was the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. The significance of these discoveries changed our minds about the ocean floor being flat and it lead to more discoveries such as ridges, trenches, and mountains. Now we have studies on the plant and animal life in this area and what causes the sea floor to have its texture. We have found what causes these trenches to separate, what causes mountains to form and how the ocean floor gets its shape.
